Many people are interested in the ovarian cancer survival rates and death rates among women. It is surprising how many lives a year and a day the disease is responsible for taking. Doctors and scientists are still researching for the cause and to find a cure for ovarian cancer. Although, there have been claims of major scientific breakthroughs, there still is not a cure.
There are approximately over 15,000 deaths a year from ovarian cancer. In the United States alone, over 1,250 women per month. That is 288 a week, 41 women a day, and 1.7 every hour of every day a woman dies from ovarian cancer.
Although, the number may seem stunning, it is less than the number of women that die every year from breast cancer. However, it represents 4% of deaths of all of the cancers in women.
Doctors say that the genetic link is clear in women with ovarian cancer and if anyone in your family has ever had ovarian cancer, then it is important to get tested. Doctors also say that removing the ovaries and having a complete hysterectomy gives a woman an excellent chance of not getting the disease.
The ovarian cancer survival rate in the United States for living 5 years is about 52% of white women. Approximately 50% of African American women survive at 5 years also. The percentage of women that survive past the five year marker is about 41% of women.
Ovarian cancer survival rate statistics also show that the average years of life lost due to ovarian cancer is almost 17 years.
The survival rate of ovarian cancer is much better in other countries other than the Unites States. For Example, Australia only averages less than 1,000 women a year that die from ovarian cancer, which amounts for 1% of the women’s deaths in the country. Canada averages around 2,000 women every year that die from the disease.
The ovarian cancer survival rate has been declining for women as more and more women are being diagnosed with the disease each year. Progress is being made on the treatment and hopefully, scientists will have a medical breakthrough soon.
